This session will describe key principles for supporting students in truly understanding operations with fractions. We will focus on the importance of verbal representations of fractions and the operations, connecting reasoning to problem contexts, and representations that help students understand when and how to find common denominators and why the “multiply across” algorithm works.

From Hands to Rules: Using Concrete Materials to Build Algebraic Generalizations

During this session, participants will engage in an algebra task as learners. They will discover the importance of guiding students through five critical phases. First, by establishing a concrete representation, then building a table, followed by writing an equation, and making a generalization. Finally, participants will collaborate with peers to design or modify an elementary algebra task.

Low-Floor, High-Ceiling games of course! In this interactive workshop, try a suite of easy, adaptable games for grades 4–6. Leave with a minimal-prep toolkit (using dice, cards, or paper) that differentiates and sparks math talk.
